Well first I would eliminate the obvious like splines and hubs and shocks and
if you have wire wheels they can get lose spokes and crackle/tinkle too. Most
back end issues clonk rather than crackle though and if nobody else comes up
with any better ideas over the next few days you may have to drop the diff and
check the mounts and bushes.
You should be able to feel the top of the diff pins with your hand and check
for drastic failure at that end but in the end the only way to really check
the diff mounts is to drop the diff.
