No, you absolutely can't get at the seal unlike the pinion seal. I ripped the
pinion seal out piece by piece like you did.

Is there anything at all gripable from the flange collar?
When my main seal was leaking, we couldnt get it out. So my buddy
grabbed some small metal shears/tin snips, and was able to get a bit of
the tip between the diff and the flange collar. He then proceeded to
bend the hell out of it until we were able to get some pliers in there
to start moving it enough to break it free.
