Actually, this is not entirely accurate. I believe the early cars had 
Lucas ACR17 and Lucas ACR18 alternators (and some even had Delco!)

But if you ask for an ACR35, that would be a reasonable strategy.

I do recall that the ACR18 had a lot higher output than the 17, but it's 
not "modern levels" of output by any stretch.
