Bruce,
The piece you are referring to is like a clip with a hump that clips onto
the steering shaft, it could be worn but its unlikely. More likely is if
your
bushings are worn, you have too much clearance between the return little
brass dog thingies on the switch and the hump on the clip. Like my technical
description? (LOL)
The other possibility is that the springs that hold the dogs in are gone,
broken or stretched (new switch time).
If you are looking at wobble and replacing the bushings anyway this may
solve your problem. There is a member of 6PACK, Francois that makes custom
parts
like a Delrin steering sleeve that fixes the bushing problem faster, easier
and without having to go through the hassle of changing the bushings (been
there - done that).

Signal return can be fixed, I fixed mine and it works fine when the
clearances are right and the switch is tight in its mount.
