Rick:
I use a floor jack placed under the bottom end of the shock. By
jacking up the car so the full weight of the car is supported by the
floor jack the spring should compress sufficiently to permit you to get
the nuts started for the spring pan. You may need to try this a few
times to get the studs aligned with the holes in the pan.
Do *NOT* do this without using a jack stand. While the weight is
supported by the floor jack, you want the jack stand positioned so that
if the jack slips, the jack stand will catch the car before it has
dropped significantly.
