The ring and pinion are typically in good shape beacause the ring constantly
bathes itself in oil as long as you have some left. The spider gears maybe
not. These can get worn and the shaft and bores galled if the oil level
gets low.
The Bentley instructions assume you have all of the special tools. The
Haynes Manual assumes you have few to none of them. I can recommend looking
at both of these. Most folks are with going to want to farm out the diff
work. Some will try it themselves. Buysing a reconditioned diff is
expensive, but a lot goes into a rebuild (especially with premium bearings).
I wonder how much you save by doing it yourself. Usually the hardest part
is going to be pressing the inner shafts off the the driven flanges because
of the tapered fit. You need to do this to replace the side seals.
You can do this job yourselrf, but it is involved and you may decide to pay
to have it done.
