I'm budgeting 6K to have a running but worn engine optimized for a SC and
another $4k for the SC itself.
No wonder some people opt to drop in a crate small block V8 !.
A refurbed but non optimized engine would be around $4.5k to have it done by a
pro.
You could probably reduce the engine prep cost by around $2k if you have the
skills, time and equipment to do the work yourself.

OK, question about the SC kit:
So suppose you spend the $3500 for the SC kit, plus the $750 for the damper,
how much would be a good ballpark figure to estimate for 'optimizing' the
rest of the engine? Would another $4000 do the trick (that would be for
crank/rods/pistons/etc)? Or would that figure be too low?
