        If it is any consolation, I thought the same thing when I got me
motor back together. I had the plugs out to spin the engine so the oil
pump would prime. When I cranked the engine I thought the starter was
bad because all I heard was a high pitched whine.
        As in your case, a little head scratching then I said to myself,
"You idiot, it is spinning too fast because there is no compression."
Sigh. Its always the simple stuff that gets me.

You know, I feel really stupid right now, I had a friend with me and
was testing some more...   He says, heh the fan is turning, and indeed
it is.   So everything is working fine, but I took the spark plugs out
way back so I could turn the crank by hand and don't have them back
yet.   The motor is just spinning merrily along and whining because it
has no compression.

I think I'm going to buy a Pinto next, anyone care to help with that?
