Thanks Peter and Jim! I did finally get it out of the engine bay by moving
the clutch master slave cylinder and got the spin adaprter on. Had real
problems trying to fish out the old gasket so I tried without replacing it
and had major leakage. Pulled it back off and after 15 minutes finally got
the old gasket out. New one was only 1/2 as thick but after getting it all
back in no leaks! I did have to end up with the filter tilting slightly
forwards to clear the clutch slave cylinder.
I even filled the filler with oil before putting it on.
