One of my "hobbies" is snagging pictures of original low mileage TR6's
when they show up on ebay. I have never seen anything other the light
colored plastic tube. That's what I had on my 72, it is on my 74.5 and I
see it on the low mileage untouched 76 that was on eBay a while back.
If black was standard at some point in time they must have sneaked it
in.

    rml:

Sad news, but "The Original Triumph TR4/4A/5/6" got it wrong. The
correct overflow tube (according to my 1974 Sales Brochure) is indeed
the white translucent tube, probably polyethylene.
I dug out my sales brochures. The 1975 brochure engine shot does not
show enough of the engine compartment to see it, but the 1974 brochure
clearly shows the overflow tube, and it is of the style shown by the
roadster factory, which TRF claims is completely correct. So my sales
brochure agrees with the TRF and the tube on my car at the time of my
purchase.
I think John's buddies and the concours judges got it wrong, unless
it changed at some point after 1974.
