Hi Bud,

There is a spring compressor made by KD Tools designed for compressing valve
springs with the head in place. Your local NAPA store (part number SER 2078)
or any of the larger parts stores will carry them. Position the piston at
the top of it's travel just in case you lose the air.

I've used the same compressor for about 20 years and numerous others have
borrowed it. Looking at it tonight and trying it on a TR6 head it worked but
it looks like it has been spread after so much use. A little squeeze in the
vise to the yoke that contacts the spring top was all it took to get it back
in shape. I'm about to rebuild a TR6 engine and plan to use valve stem
seals.
