What to look for

OK, got the sump off, thrust washers lying in the bottom.  I'm gonna start 
inspecting now.  The rear main seal is intact, and everything looks OK so 
far.  I am now gonna pull off the rear main bearing.  But a random thought 
occured to me--  What exactly do I look for to see if the block is shot?  I 
know I need to look on both the crankcase and the crank, but how can I tell if 
any wear is too much?

Suggestions?
