  Jim,

Is there any particular reason you are trying to remove the stub axle?
I just stripped the rust and old paint off from mine, taped the areas I
didn't want to paint and primed and painted. Worked great.

As for the replacing the rubber steering rack bushings with poly. I
did mine, once with the car on jack stands and once with the car on a
lift. Much easier with the car on a lift but a PITA either way. I
didn't take out the fan at all. It is just a tight fit in a place that
is hard to see. I had to do it by feel for the most part. The bushings
are held on by a metal cover and a u-bolt and accessed from the bottom
of the car. At least I think I am understanding your question
correctly, but maybe not. Does this make sense?

Everything is off the front suspension of my son's 73 TR6.
Thanks to your ideas and lots of digital pictures, we might
get it put back together after painting.

Two pieces are still giving us a bit of trouble. Both
Haynes and Bentley say those stub axles should come out with
a tap. Are we going to have to take them to a machine shop
to get them pressed out so we can paint the uprights?

We are going to pull the steering rack and replace the
rubber mounts with nylatron. Bentley says pull the fan to
get to those front nuts. Looks like that may be the case -
anyone get them out with the fan still in place? How did
 you do it?

As always thanks for the help - trying to get this car back
on the road for the dive your British car week at the end of
the month. Dad wanted to drive it to the Mitty races at
Road Atlanta - that certainly didn't happen.

 Wish us luck,
