Jim----I had never noticed that these pins had a taper to them. I
must've been lucky when tapping them out the right direction. (Or used
my BA hammer)

insertion into the hole very simple.
Removal is, as you suggest, pretty simple. I actually use the black
escutcheon to compress the spring: I press a prise-bar (those long
things that look like giant screwdrivers) against the escutcheon, and a
pin punch to remove, and a pair of self-closing tweezers to hold the pin
when re-inserting.
If you lose the pin, you can make a new one out of a nail: cut it to the
correct length (as suggested), file the ends so there are no snags,
taper slightly on one end, and just insert.
