List,

Have sent this message twice to the list but it hasnt shown up. Now it is more
about figuring out if my post will reach the list as it is about sharing info.

John,

Check out my car at the web site below. I have updated my page with 7
pictures to show the process I describe below.

I did something similar. If I understand correctly, your repair is
being made with the mount brace still on the car. My repair was made
with the brace removed since my brace was split anyways. On my car the
top of the stud had worked its way loose in a rough circle around the
stud as you describe in your post. I haven't looked at any other cars
but I suspect that this is a common problem. I did not want to remove
the body or cut an access plate in the body so with fellow lister Rick
Patton's help and expertise we figured out a way to repair the mount
from under the car. Keep in mind that Rick has a lift in his garage.
That makes the task much easier. A flat plate was made to fit in the
U-Channel of the frame and a hole was drilled in the plate just a
little larger than the stud. The stud was welded to it at the correct
angle, the brace welded to the stud and both fitted onto the car. The
rust, dirt and paint were ground away to allow strong welds. Then
everything was welded in. Next the reinforcement plates were welded in
and the repair was done.

I am sure you can do something similar. There was no doubt as to the
need to repair my car the way I did. You might be able to get away with
just welding over the area that you suspect is cracked if it isn't
obvious that it is cracked. Certainly another plate welded as you
describe cant hurt at all.

Some people even go so far as to box in the U-channel where the front
differential mounts are located. Certainly this would add strength to
the frame.

I hope this helps. Let me know if you have any questions or if I
haven't been clear.

Aaron

Stuff deleted....

I have the drawing to produce the plates to box in the front mounts,
but I
was also thinking of taking a 1 and 1/2 inch strap 3/16 inch thick and
about an
inch wide and drilling a hole the same diameter as the bolt. Then
notch out
one side so that this so that it would fit arround the bolt and can be
welded
to the bolt and to the surrounding metal thus providing increased
strength in
this area. The width of this extra support would still allow for the
ends of
the mount to be boxed.

Anyone ever done this or can anyone think of a reason not to repair in
this
manner? Thanks.
