As I now have an impact wrench, I use that with 100% success. Before I acquired my impact wrench, I used another technique, which was also successful. <WARNING - Purists can start cringing now> I used a pipe wrench (AKA monkey wrench) on the fan extension to keep it from turning while I removed the bolt with a large breaker bar and socket <END WARNING>.
