Colin,

What are the chances of you getting away with an early
filter housing?  The kind with the two snorkles at the
front?  You could run 2 hoses down to the cardboard
shroud.  I mean if that would be allowed of course:) 
Little ram air type thing.  Aside from that.  I've
seen a few where the airbox was modified such that
each filter was completely exposed.  Then K&N filters
were used.  Looked quite nice!  In fact, I believe
there is one on e-bay right now...NFI
