Gray Sludge in the Tranny

I think that gray sludge in the tranny / overdive means bad things.  I
actually think it is coming form the A-Type Overdrive.  What is involved in
re-building an A-type?  Is this a "do it yourself" or a "Don't try this at
home bosy and girls."  What would this cost to have it done?
