John,
Gray sludge in the transmission usually means the layshaft needle
bearings have been or are in the process of being eaten away and the
layshaft is being cut into. The majority of the sludge is from the
layshaft and manifestations of the process can be squealing or crunching
sounds from the transmission, especially in first or reverse.
If this is your problem, Herman Van Den Akker can supply you with a
Laygear fitted with two needle bearings on each end which should much
longer service than the poor original design.

I think that gray sludge in the tranny / overdive means bad things. I
actually think it is coming form the A-Type Overdrive. What is involved
in re-building an A-type? Is this a "do it yourself" or a "Don't try
this at home bosy and girls." What would this cost to have it done?

Regards,
John Cyg.
