Tried the open ended wrenches but it was real hard to prevent them
slipping off and knocking the flats off the nuts. So I went to plan B
which worked great and also had the advantage of a pleasant working
environment! For me this one is Plan A next time... I folded the
gaitor back on itself to get access. Thanks to all who gave these
suggestions.

So the exle is out. But just out of curiosity, Robert, tell me about
the flame wrench option.

So the problem I'm working on is a heavy click, not quite a thunk, from
back there. On inspection, the u-js seems tight, and the click is
coming from the sliding splines. Surely this is supposed to be tight
and I assume this mean a new axle??? Since I gotta get the U-Js outta
there, I might as well replace them too.

Does this sound like a plan that'll work?

Take two open-ended 9/16 wrenches...

If that does not work, note that the nut end of the fastener faces the
wheel well. Remove the road wheel. From the wheel well side, you should
be able to smoosh the rubber boot down a bit to expose the nut. Use a
3/8" socket and ratchet and a "really long" extension (I put a 12, a 6
and one or two 3 inch extension together - so about 24" total). This
gets the ratchet out into the wheel well so you can crank on it. You
will also have to rest a combo wrench on the bolt head so that the bolt
doesn't turn.

If all that fails, then the last resort is the "flame wrench", but that
is ONLY a last resort.
