Scot,
I too found that after dropping the engine into place, I could not
squeeze the belt past the cross member.
I had bolted the engine mounts to the "bracket" that is on either side of
the engine block, prior to the "replacement". What I found was that the
mounting holes on the side "brackets" are slotted, and I had placed the
rubber mount at the back of the slots. This brought the engine forward,
and the pulley close to the cross member.
I only had to support the engine, and reposition the "mount" in the
slots, and this did the trick. Now the fan extension is centered on the
cross member, allowing the fan belt to slide past. It is close, but much
better than before.
This may or may not help, but if this is the case, it is an easy "fix".
