Exhaust manifold collector gasket

Had a major leak at the exhaust manifold collector
gasket, where it meets the down pipe.
As it turns out I need to replace all of the
studs, shoulda done this while putting the engine
together...
Does it matter which side of the gasket faces up
or down? one side is smooth. Should I use any
gasket sealer?
