List,
a very disappointing night last night, trying to start my six after a full
engine rebuild. I took the plugs out and cranked the starter a few times to
get
the oil flowing, and then replaced the plugs and the starter wouldn't budge -
a click at the relay, but no power to the starter. After removing and
replacing the starter, it started to get power when cranked - but very very
slowly
(sometimes so slowly, I would actually see the fan belt move in the opposite
direction - seems silly, eh, but true). I then pulled my F150 closer and
jumped
the TR6 - the car started, barely, but the cranking was still very slow and
labored with short bursts of quick/normal starter speed cranking. Sometimes,
the starter would refuse to crank after a few attempts, at which point I'd wait
a few seconds and try again - and this would allow the starter to begin
turning again. Maybe related is that the starter would only get power at the
beginning of the extreme spring-loaded turn of the ignition switch. If I
turned
the key fully on (to the end of that spring loaded extreme), the starter would
not turn.
The PO did have the ignition switch rewired by a shop after a theft attempt,
at which point I bought the car. What are your thoughts?
Thanks,
Geoff Parker
