Don,
Stainless steel is not actually plated, but is an alloy of primarily
nickel/iron or chrome/nickel/iron, with the largest percent by far being
iron. Some stainless will fool you because it is actually somewhat magnetic
and it sounds like the trim you are looking at is stainless steel.
Stainless is most often abraded and buffed, actually as little as possible
because it is a very hard metal and finishing is slow going. Then the best
thing to due is have it passivated, a simple process with very caustic
chemicals which makes it less likely to corrode but doesn't much change it's
appearance. There must be someone in Virginia who can do it for you.
