After careful research, I found the true nature of Mole Grips. This was
posted to the Land Rover list. It is 4WD oriented and marque derogatory.
Actually, mole grips are very different from vice grips. They are a
SST (Special Service Tool) that come standard with Jeeps.
As Jeeps became less capable, Chrysler realized that something needed
to be done to enhance off-road performance. After a series of
failures, they hit upon a workable solution. Jeeps now come equipped
with mole cages. When the Jeep gets stuck, the moles are released to
undermine the obstacle.
It is a very simple method, but there is one complication. After
bouncing around in a cage on a rough trail, the moles tend to get
pretty pissed off. The usually placid moles will tear your hand right
off your wrist if you reach in for them. Hence, the mole grips.
