Mark,

I too have a leak in or near the cold start valve (mine is small).

It would help to know if your leak is occurring with the car off, or when it
is running.

If it is doing it with the car off, then it must be a float/ jet problem as
the gas should not get as high as the cold start valve. I currently have my
carbs on the bench and notice that the lower screw goes all the way into the
gas chamber. It could be that you are getting some leakage here. It might
pay to put a dab of Hylomar on the screw threads before replacing this
screw.

If the leak only occurs with the engine running, then I'd suspect that the
cold start valve is not properly seating on the surface of the carb. A
lister observed that he moved his leak by swapping the valves front to back,
indicating it had something to do with the function of that particular
valve.

My remedy was to disassemble the valve and use valve grinding compound to
lap the valve to the carb body. It took a bit of lapping to get the surfaces
to mate properly, so I'm hopeful that this solves my problem. Be sure to
wash the carb and valve well so none of the grit gets into the motor.

Good luck,
Peter
