The advantage of the Grose Jet over the standard jet is it can flow more
fuel when wide open, which makes them favorable with the racing crowd.
But the principle is the same, so the valve opens in response to the
dropping of the float. So long as either the stock jet or the one made
by Mr. Grose opens and closes on cue, most engines would never respond
differently. Someone has fed you poi.  
 
You could lower the floats to 17mm and still be in spec, tho it probably
won't cure the gas leak. 

The "gas leakng out of the cold start valve" has bugged other owners.
Maybe they will pass on their findings.
