I just wanted to chime in on this one. My point is purely speculative, but
bear with me.
The 2nd overdrive problem is not necessarily a problem with the gears
being too weak. It turns out that if you play with the overdrive
hydraulics a bit to crank up the line pressure, 2nd overdrive works very
well, thank you.
I think this supposition of no 2nd overdrive is driven by the fact that
the factory set the line pressure too low in an effort to make the
overdrive engage more smoothly.
Now the J-type is totally different and I'm sure that the construction of
it is less robust than the A-type, so 2nd OD with a J-type is a
non-starter.
