Hi,
Echoing what DT says - cast iron valve guides are "self lubricating". That
said, the purpose of the external oil feed is to provide additional oil to
the rockers, not the valve guides. The burning of the excess oil is a
negative side effect of the additional lube to the rockers.
FWIW, when I get a valve job, I usually have the machinist fit valve stem
seals. I would not recommend my "solution" to most folks because the stem
seals that I have used on all my motors do not allow the use of the stock
double TR6 springs and spring "shims/pads". But (as I've responded to a
bunch of folks on this list), I run either the '72 valve springs or some
other custom jobs (from Piper) that are also single wire type - so I don't
need the pads or shims.
If you want the stock setup _and_ valve guide seals, you need to "cut
down" the valve guides to fit a seal that is flush with the diameter of
the stock guide. Any competent machinst can do this job. It just takes
some extra money.
