Jim---As others have told you, using seals at the stems have moderate success in keeping (some) oil from getting pulled down the valve stems. Should you decide to use these, you will be in a position to "rock" the top of the stems, when they're free of spring load. Compare this movement to the data in the Bentley, or other manual, to see how much wear is in the guides. I would pack the top of the cylinder with rope, as suggested, to be sure the valves had no where to drop. Dick |
