I agree with wire brushing.
If that's too aggressive, I've found the 3M plastic disks (they kind of
resemble plastic brillo pads) that you stick in a power drill to be very
effective, but milder. I've also found spray-on Permatex gasket remover to
be a very powerful solvent for removing grime, etc., but make sure you don't
get it on any rubber seals.

Howdy listers,
I have a good used clutch master cylinder - perfect bore, but it looks
like doody (dirt and wear) on the outside. I have wiped down with goof
off but it didn't help, tried a little dremel tool buffing but it didn't
work well. Any ideas on how to restore the outside to make it look like
new. I have tried repainting before but the aluminum spray paint never
"stuck" well. Any ideas would be appreciated!
