Sigh.

Well I got THE PHONE CALL call today from my mechanic. Although I haven't
been to the shop yet to see things for myself, I'm told that the broken
valve in my TR6 actually went through the piston and has done "significant"
damage to the cylinder wall. He told me that while the cylinder could be
bored, it would require all new pistons and given the tear down required it
would probably be cheaper to replace the whole engine. Ouch.

I need the collective advice and wisdom of those on this list. Although I
fully expected to be replacing water pumps, alternators, brakes, etc. I'm
WAY over my head in terms of my knowledge of Triumphs on this one.

The way I see it I have two choices: 1) sell the car as-is to someone with
the stomach and resources to take on an engine replacement. I'd guess I'll
take about a $2K loss if I do this and chalk it up to a life lesson learned.
2) I can go ahead and replace the engine and get on with life knowing I have
the peace of mind of a new, strong engine.

It's the second option I could use advice on. First, how much (roughly)
should one expect to pay for a rebuilt/remanufactured engine for a 6?
Second, can anyone recommend sources for a new engine? If I'm going to go
through with this, I'd rather drop in an engine that I can trust rather than
buying one out of wreck.

Any guidance would be appreciated.

John
