Ken---The standard size needle for the ZS carbs on your engine would be
marked B1AF. This marking can be found at the very top of the needle,
when pulled out of the air piston. Needles that measure .001 thicker
thruout their range would lean out the mix, as you noted. Count on less
performance if this (thicker) measurement starts after leaving the idle
station. You might be better off in adjusting standard needles towards
the lean side at idle, which will carry some of this leanness thruout
the range.  

It can be very entertaining when changing or reshaping needles. I
suggest always keeping a set of standard needles to return to, as it's
easy to get lost along the way.
