Hi,
Regarding two-can distributors...
if you want to install it on your car go ahead and do it. You will need to
make sure that you get the right "taps" for the vacuum lines for the
advance and retard. I'm not sure you actually gain anything by removing
the vacuum retard...
But if you really want to tune your car for power, don't even look at a
Lucas distributor. Instead, get your hands on a Mallory dual point all
mechanical unit. While it won't pass a visual emissions check and it is
probably illegal in most states, the Mallory dual point is easily
re-curved to your needs by either changing the total advance and/or the
rate of advance via the springs.
It's not a bolt in installation, however. You need to drill the shaft for
a drive dog, but a competent machinist can do the job in less than an
hour.
I'm a big fan of this setup. Probably the 4th or 5th best $250 you can
spend on your TR6.
In my opinion, the Lucas distributors are basically junk.
But if you're a real glutton for punishment, you can pay a ton to get your
Lucas rebuilt and then recurved for your needs by a number of the folks
that do rebuilds. If you don't want to pay those folks to do the job, call
around your local area for a shop that has a distributor machine. They can
recurve your distributor to whatever you want. But the rebuild and recurve
will cost you more than the purchase cost of a new Mallory distributor and
you can't make too many changes to the Lucas unit on your own...
Regards,
rml
