This works fine. I actually usually use two of the three top-center bolt
holes (5/16-24 bolts three or four inches long or some old valve cover
studs are just right). I then use the two lower corners... either on the
rear engine plate (if the flywheel needs to be in place or right to the
block if the plate is off.

No, you're missing nothing. 4 each 5/16-24 automotive grade (grade 5)
bolts will hold things up.
I'f you are paranoid about dropping the engine on your foot, use a
chainfall of your engine crane to support things from above while you're
working on the engine, but I've mounted TR6 engines on stands for year
without any problems on the support side using the block or the rear
engine plate.
