Joe---The rear hubs should bset up to only have a few thousands of play
in the bearing. An illustration will show a collapsible spacer that is
taken up by the large inner nut. Therefore, no in and out play should
exist to the 'feel'.
Given the large surface areas in the splined axles, they generally last
a looong time, given any lubrication at all, before enough play develops
to see or hear. Sometimes the play felt or heard is wear in one or both
of the pairs of U-joints between the hub and the differential. Give
these a good look.
Some have found the differential mount brackets to develop a crack, with
an accompanying 'click' when starting off. The front right side the
first one to go. If so, these can be welded, and better supported with
gusset kits, sold by Triumph parts houses.
