I think the rotors/discs are good, they were fitted properly as you say, and
the new pads seemed to bed in fine - in fact the squealing didn't start
until I'd done a two hundred miles or so after fitting..

Anyway - thanks to everyone for the suggestions - I'll give them all a go
(in order of expense) and see what happens, and replace them if that's the
only option. (Last night the squeal had reduced but the car was pulling to
one side, so looks like the copper grease finally got somewhere it shouldn't
!)

BTW I have two friends with EBC green stuff pads fitted to their cars - one
with a Lotus Elise (never squealed and been 100% fine) and an older BMW 5
series (wouldn't stop squealing from day 1 and were swapped out, finally).
