try and get a copy of the current Hemmings Motor News (local
bookstore/magazine store) It is a paperback, about 1000 pages, about 7
x 10 in size, orangy/brown cover. There are all kinds and years of 6s
listed every month. If you can't find a copy, let me know, I'll send
you the pages from this current month's issue.
BTW, I paid $4200 for a 73 6 in 1997. It needed a new interior (the
old one was worn and seat foams disintegrated, but not trashed), a
heater valve, a complete exhaust (manifold back). There was also a
delaminated spot in the windshield. However, the motor was strong, it
only had 30,000 miles on it and the body and frame were excellent.
Other than the paint, it is an original car and had not been cobbled
up.
I did the interior, replaced the heater valve, replaced the exhaust
and the windshield myself, so that helped lower the expenses related
to those items.
It had been repainted by a PO to a dark charcoal metallic grey,
which, although was not the orginal pimento, was an excellent paint
job, and I could live with the color. Later on, I replaced the tires
(not worn, but aged) and found a factory hardtop that I had painted to
match the car.
As it turned out, the dreaded clutch fork pin disease struck and I
needed a new clutch. However, I much preferred buying the car for the
price I did and having a terrific BC mechanic that I KNOW install the
clutch, rather than relying on the seller who SAYS a complete new
clutch was put in.
While it was at the shop for the clutch and a carb tune, the water
pump gave out. I was just happy that the car was already in the shop
when that happened.
In 1998 I got a 67 TR4a with IRS. This was, I believe, an older
restoration. I paid $5200 for it. I had to have a new clutch put in
and I redid the seats. The car also needed a heater valve and some
general wiring repairs. Several wires had been cut and then just
twisted together and taped. I soldered them and put on that heat
shrink electrical tubing. The windshield to body seal was good, but
the actual WS seal was dried out and cracked. I hoped to be able to
just replaced the seal, but I ended up breaking the glass and having
to buy a new WS. The second one went in. Currently I am waiting for
the console cover to come to finish off the interior.
It had a high mileage engine on it, but I ran some Sea-Foam through it
and it runs fine. Recently there appeared a soft knocking at idle that
disappears at increased RPMs. I'm thinking it's a loose timing chain
and will have it tended to in the spring.
