Well, Looks like I panicked too soon...Or too early? At least Ifound out
the cam was indeed out of wack, without going into too much detail, let's
just say that people when we work on our cars take notes if your not able
to finish the job all at one time! Since I'm so busy at my job which is
at a constant creative frenzy and trying to get the house "finished" I
work on the car in spurts.....These past few day's I realized it's July
already and I need to get this car going! So what happened? A few moons
back I put in the cam when the installed the head...Well I thought I was
dialing in the cam right but upon inspection I never started out right to
begin with.....First, and in all respect to Dick Taylor, this had nothing
to do with deviating from stock...infact bone head me did not line up the
stock alignment marks on the crank and cam wheels in respect to each
other....AND I forgot to see which cycle the piston was rising, i.e.
compression stroke or 180 deg. So here I am with way too much on my mind,
1:30 on a weekday night after I had finished working on the front patio
ceramic tile. Trying to figure out why these numbers are not quite
"working" out....... After a while I said close
enouph...DO NOT DO THIS WITH ANY JOB! Lack of rest and trying to plan
everything all at once was a big factor in poor judgement....And you would
think I would know better! I used to be a mechanic but that was over ten
years ago now and as with anything if you don't use it.......... Well,
back to the present..I pulled the cover...To those that know it is a pain
in the @#$$% since you have to remove all in front of the motor... and
found the aformentioned marks OFF! I used a different degree wheel this
time, an ALUMINUM one! Made a hard wire pointer corresponding to TDC and
rigidly fixed that. Followed the directions from the manual and purged my
mind of Honda and BMW info and went back to basics. Found TDC on the
compression stroke. Set the dial indicator on the exhaust then intake
valves and started to see where I was....... Following Goods directions
on what the valves should be doing and when...I was getting the proper
results and oh what a feeling that is!! At .50 lift the exhaust was
opening at 46 BBDC! + or - 1 degree..It was closing I think at 7 to 8
ATDC right what the specs said! I wish I could convey how good that
felt! And the noises that were being made as the motor went though it's
cycle (the puff, hiss as the compression is being made) Was
VERY reassuring!! The same accuracy was for the intake as well but I'm
depending on my memory here for the numbers.....The exhaust numbers stuck
in my mind. All of this came about after some adjustment on the cam
wheel. I wrote down the number from each attempt as a reference. After
the sixth time I got it. I then made sure the distributor was dialed in
(made sure the oil pump drive was engaged) and went to bed a happy
camper. Today I will check the valve clearances (AGAIN!) and button
things up...AGAIN!! Back off the carbs to a leaner mixture and start her
up. I took my time this time and I chose to THINK. I even took a break
and went to see a movie......go see Shaft if you get the chance!.........
The point here is take your time, take notes and think. Seems easy
enouph, eh? Thanks for letting me ramble! Tim thanks for the advice and
Dick in answer to the glowing pipe theory, I had the the pipes coated.
The one I could see some of it had burned off! The other ones were
relatively ok, actually to other had faint burning off in a localized spot
(at the bend) so I could not see if they all got as hot...but I think
they all were rather toasty........Like I stated before, I didn't leave
the car on long enouph to find out. I know what you were saying about the
check in the dark theory, my TVR Many moons had a similaiar affliction
regarding the SU's it had at the time (LEAN) My Merkur would have a red
turbo charger after a hard run....Quite a show isn't it? :-)
