Ditto W. whitmoyer's posting re: silicone...I have had it in my 69 E since
1990 with no problems. All four calipers and the master were rebuilt at that
time. Since I preach sound maintenance, I am embarrassed to say that I have
not bled the system since then...shame shame. But I did replace the original
brake booster this past fall (after 30 years, who can complain about a
part???). This gave me the opportunity to go over the entire system as well
as flush it and put in new fluid. The "old" fluid was clean and clear and
there was no residue or gunk in the reservoir.
BTW, the soft pedal from silicone comes from too vigorously pumping the
pedal during bleeding. Gentle pedal work will help prevent this. Secondly,
let the system then sit for a day or so and rebleed to get rid of any air
that may have been lurking.
There are also newer formulations of silicone for racing purposes with
higher heat tolerances.
