Tom---Being a "California" car, it's possible there wasn't enough anti-freeze in the coolant before you stored it. It may indeed be a freeze plug that's displaced in the head. If the steam doesn't stop, this plug should be replaced. You could temporarily try to whack it back in, by removing the battery first, for working angle.
