John--Without actually looking, I'd say that if there's only one O-ring
in the groove, it would be about 3/16" from the machined edge, when in
place. This is enough to know you've started the cannister in squarely.
For what it's worth, I haven't changed this O-ring in my engine since
1991. It's been thru a couple dozen oil changes and doesn't leak.

Thanks Dick, I've gotten a lot of good advice on this and your's has
added something new to it all. If there is the old o-ring still in the
groove, and I get it out, how deep should I expect the new one to go?
It shouldn't be visible should it?
