I once had the pleasure of going parts shopping in England with Vic Thomas,
founder of the "Historic Lotus Register".
His method was to place the required item on the counter and inquire: "I
don't suppose you'd have one of these, would you."
The counterman would seize the item and scurry off . . he wouldn't DARE
admit it if he was puzzled . . . much thrashing about and consultation
would take place just out of earshot. . . and the man would reappear either
with or without the part but . . he'd NEVER admit that he didn't know
exactly what it was!
