First never use synthetic oil for the break in of an engine.  It is too
slick to let the parts develop normal wear patterns, ie. you rings won't
seat.  Put 10,000 miles on the engine before switching to synthetic oil.

For air trapped in your engine try jacking up the front of your car
before filling the radiator.  I use to use this method on another car
that had problems that way.

As for the gunk in the engine, did you rebuild the motor without having
the block hot tanked?  If you did you could have all kinds of continuing
cooling problems.  You may need to do a rem
