The owner's manual for the Spitfire says to engage while under power.
Inotherowrds, just flip the switch!  Disengaging while off the 
throttle may help pull the clutch cones apart if they are inclined to 
stick occasionally, but it raelly shouldn't be necessary.  At least, 
this is what I've always believed.
