Are you sure that was a TR3, rather than a TR2 ?  The TR2 did get noticeably
better gas mileage, apparently mostly due to it's smaller carbs.

Don't forget, those are Imperial gallons, which are 20% larger than US
gallons.  So, 35 miles per Imperial gallon is only 29 miles per US gallon.

I vote for driving downhill, with a tail wind !

But more likely, they took the windshield off, and found the exact speed
where gas consumption was minimum (around 35-40mph I'd guess), then drove
exactly that speed on flat roads.

I'd say that probably corresponds closer to what Autocar called "driven
hard" and since they only got 23 mpg (US gallons), you're doing quite well.
Also, does your engine still have 83mm liners in it ?  Most don't, and the
bigger displacement definitely affects fuel efficiency.  The tall, skinny
tires they had then would probably make a different too.

Personally, I rarely check how far I can go on a tank of petrol.  My TR3A
gets more smiles per gallon than any other car I've seen !
