No, the 'legs' of the side curtains should reach directly to the side
curtain mounts on the face of the door.  Note however that there are two
different types of mounts, which take different side curtains.  Early cars
had a big chrome dealy that the side curtain leg slid inside, with a
setscrew to hold it together (known as the 'wedge' mounts); while the later
mounts were painted, stamped sheet metal, and the leg was held by a Dzus
button.  The VTR web site gives the change point as TS 28826.  The mounts
have to match the side curtain (although there are several other sidecurtain
variations).
