I wish I had asked if there was a trick when I put my rubber bumpers on 
a couple years ago. I used the old "hook the top edge then gently flex 
the rubber over the bottom edge" method. I will say that it worked but, 
as John pointed out, resulted in long bursts of profanity not to mention 
blisters on both thumbs. John, any idea what we here in the USA would 
call glycerine?

As for protection, the new ones do indeed powder just as much as the 
originals. My father is a chem engineer. He suggested using a clear 
acrylic floor wax for both keeping them supple and blocking the UV. The 
stuff we have under the kitchen sink is a bit yellow, so I haven't tried 
this yet and I won't suggest a brand name until I do.
