Yes, a valid point raised here, a steep hill will have the same effect on
the early type. I do believe that the mechanism has something like a roller
or ball bearing that rolls forward to give the locking effect. The make I am
thinking of is early Kangol fitted to many BL(BMC) cars in the early days of
inertia reel fitment.
