The unit I put in my 76 had been reconditioned by Atlanta Imports, so I
can't tell you first-hand what they're like when they come out of the
saloons. I was TOLD by AI that I was buying a gearset with ratios identical
to a TR6. (Actually, they said it WAS a TR6 gearset.) Running with the new
unit, the rpm shift points seem to be the same as before. However, the
lightened flywheel I put in (18lbs) complicates things because the car gets
up to the rpm shift points quicker. There could be minor differences in the
ratios, but I seem to be shifting at the same rpms as before based on how
the car sounds, but I get their quicker because of the lightened flywheel.
At highway speeds, fourth gear is about the same rpms as before. (But I
definitely notice a difference when I hit the OD switch; then it's an
immediate drop of about 500 rpm. LOVE it!!)
AI told me they often have to cannibalize other units to put together a
complete OD/trans because the yard workers who remove these things from the
saloons aren't gentle with caste aluminum. I also installed the TRF HD
clutch, throw-out bearing, fork, lever, bushings and a new slave cylinder.
All of these parts were strictly bolt-in and the bell-housing and speedo
angle drive matched up perfectly. Sitting next to my non-OD tranny in the
garage, the units looked identical except for the OD, of course, and one
other very important difference: the rear of the OD unit had been machined
in order to mate up with the rear engine/tranny mount or miss the frame--I
forget which.
These are just my impressions; I'm sure someone else can give you actual
specs.
